A new service has been launched in the North East.

The Silver Line – a service to provide information and signposting to older people and also a telephone friendship service was launched today by Esther Rantzen CBE.

Based on Childline, The Silver Line was initially launched in Manchester, the Isle of Man and the North West Region and is now available in the North East Region.

The service has been set up to provide a service 24/7, whereby lonely, older people can ring up to speak to someone who understands their problems, provide information on a variety of subjects, or just be there for a chat. The full national service will be launched before Christmas 2013.

The service has a freephone number 0800 328 8888
